The second mountain our group of five "babu's" climbed in Africa
was Mt. Meru, not far from Mt. Kilimanjaro.
This mountain proved easier to climb than either Mt. Kenya or Mt. Kilimanjaro, partly because of its lower height,
but also because of the easy trail. Our conditioning on Mount Kenya the week before also meant we were in
better shape, and helped us to acclimatize faster to the altitude.
"Babus" was a name given to us by our guides on Mt. Kilimanjaro,
and means "venerable old grandfathers". All five
of us made it to the top of both Mt. Meru and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Then we celebrated by going on safari in the
Ngorongoro crater, Serengeti National Park, and Lake Manyara Park.
